Lactation Consultants work in a variety of settings. A Lactation Consultant can help with basic breastfeeding education and encouragement in newborn care. Breastfeeding is something all women and all babies were designed to do. Breastfeeding is a nature’s way,but it is a learned art for mother and baby. Knowing what to expect and becoming familiar with the process of breastfeeding can reduce anxiety and allow breasrtfeeding to be a natural experience.
The first two weeks are the most critical time for each new mom and her baby to establish breastfeeding. To create a plentiful supply of breastmilk, babies need to nurse effectively 8 to 12 times every 24 hours from the beginning of life. Breastfeeding is a learned skill — for both mom and baby.
It takes fine motor skills, gross motor skills, time and patience. Plus, even though you may have read all the books, the baby didn’t!
I teach mothers to learn about the marvelous benefit of nursing their baby:
- latch and positioning
- how to know when the baby is lached on correctly
- how to recognize infant deeing cues
- establilishing their milk supplies
- breasfeeding benefits
- recognizing problems early:
- latch-on problems
- sore nipple or engorgement problems
- infant weight loss issues
- low milk supply issues
The natural art of breastfeeding is easier when mothers know what to except. This is where a Lactation Consultant can be a great benefit.
